Goodbye from Kyle!

Today’s newsletter is an announcement from Dirt’s co-founder Kyle Chayka, who launched the publication in December 2020.

Dear Dirt readers,

First, I want to thank you all for following this newsletter. Second, I’m announcing today that I’m leaving Dirt. I’ll remain the co-founder of this great publication, but I won’t be involved in the newsletter or the company going forward.

I’ll be focusing on my work as a staff writer for The New Yorker, continuing my column there covering what I usually describe as “internet stuff,” and finishing my second book, FILTERWORLD: How Algorithms Flattened Culture. That book will be published by Doubleday in January of 2024 — I hope you’ll look out for it! The best way to get updates on the book and my other work is to subscribe to my personal Substack newsletter. You can also follow me on Twitter

On my newsletter, I’ll also post a weekly original essay covering that intersection of tech and culture — short missives on how algorithmic feeds alienate us but also whatever actually cool stuff I’m finding online. If you’re a Dirt reader, you probably know what I’m talking about. I hope you’ll join me there:

Dirt will continue publishing great essays and dispatches from Terry and all of our other contributors, under Daisy and Jocelyn’s editing. I’m looking forward to following along as a reader and watching as the company grows into its new platform and more. Looking back at our earliest posts, I have only three words: Chill Tokyo vlog

Thanks again for all of your attention, energy, and participation! Dirt’s unique community, a specific sliver of the vast internet, has always been the best part of this project.

Kyle Chayka
