Saints and sinners.

JOCELYN SILVER

After six years in a Chinatown mall in New York City, the vintage geniuses at James Veloria have touched down in Los Angeles, opening a pop-up space in Lincoln Heights above restaurant Arroz and Fun (they posted a helpful TikTok as to how best access the shop). The LA store is similar to the NYC location, in that it is beautiful, covered in tinsel, imbued with a warmth and friendliness that you rarely get from a serious vintage experience, and filled with extremely iconic merchandise—Gaultier, Gianni Versace, Todd Oldham, Miu Miu fanny packs. It’s open till October 15th, and if you are in LA, I would recommend running, not walking.

PerdrisĆ¢t—a Melbourne company helmed by emerging nose Callum Rory Mitchell—has made noise in the perfume world for Fuck Boy, a scent which includes a ā€œcocaine accord.ā€ But Fuck Boy, billed as ā€œan ode to piƱa coladas and party boys,ā€ is more than its most controversial/brilliant accord; it has whiffs of sea salt, pineapple, coconut, musk, and something called ā€œsolar notes.ā€ It’s more salty and marine than sweet, and I doused myself in it by a pool in the Hollywood Hills, which felt appropriate but not as appropriate as a pool in Miami would be. The full bottle is pricey, but there are large samples available in a $40 box, just enough to get through the last of the summer heat.

I saw a TikTok where a dude in Montauk grilled corn, purĆ©ed it with a bunch of good soft butter (let the corn cool first!), and put it on toasted bread with a slice of gorgeous heirloom tomato on top. I thought, I must have this. I don’t have a grill, but I cut off some corn kernels, charred them in a pan over the stove, reserved some to add into the butter whole, for texture, and then otherwise followed the chill Montauk’s man instructions with sungolds on top instead, because I cannot find one decent large tomato in the greater Los Angeles area. It was glorious and whenever you read this, I am probably busy making it again.

MICHELLE SANTIAGO CORTƉS

I use this bra as a top: It holds without squishing, cradles without pushing up. If it’s over 90 degrees, this is all I’m wearing. I only use Girlfriend Collective workout clothes and it’s insanely durable. I’ve had this bra for 3 years. It’s not for working out, though, a tiddie will slip out.

If it’s a 90’s techno-dystopia or sci-fi flick with campy costumes and slutty characters, it’s probably one of my favorite movies. Tank Girl is Hackers’ (1995) techno-dystopian Australian cousin. The costumes are editorial-excellence, Lori Petty is magnetic. It’s cartoonish and tacky (in the best way). Today’s furries can’t hold a candle to Jeff Kober’s Ripper.

I randomly got this at a Brooklyn Art Book Fair two years ago and I wish it was longer. This is an anthology of very horny, XXX, fantasy-based erotica. It includes contributions for various artists across illustrative styles. It has angels, snails, tall women, daydreams, and plenty of fantasies. All seductively printed in Riso-pink.

Dried Eucalyptus

Last month, I went and bought a bundle of fresh eucalyptus from the farmer’s market to hang in my shower. I expected it to only last a few weeks, but as the leaves dried out, they have only become more fragrant. The scent reminds me of the outdoor showers I used to take as a kid in California, while conveniently masking all of the funky bathroom odors… If kept out of direct water, the eucalyptus can last up to a month or two, and I am planning to add dried lavender to my next bundle.

As a new-ish dog stepmom in Brooklyn, I had to get a Wild One harness for my partner’s pup, Hamm, who is about half my body weight and an occasional puller when he gets a whiff of food. (The streets of Brooklyn are littered with chicken bones.) The previous harness we had was not very intuitive to put on, and Hamm hates wearing any form of restraint. We still have to straddle him to buckle it in, but he looks dashing in it! The harnesses come in a range of colors with three different attachment points; I got the blue and green one that’s from a collaboration with designer Isaac Mizrahi.

DAISY ALIOTO

I listened to this album a lot when it first came out and recently rediscovered it buried in my Spotify likes. Kishi Bashi is the solo project of Kaoru Ishibashi, who you may know from the band of Montreal. The album includes an allegorical love song dedicated to a steak. ā€œMr. Steak you were great, eh?ā€ Another musical gift from the great city of Athens, Georgia.

Jessica Biel, I owe you an apology. I wasn’t really familiar with your game. Biel produced and also stars in the first season of this haunting police procedural. Not since True Detective season one, has a single season of a show so propelled and unsettled me. Also like True Detective, the show unfortunately falls off–I could barely get through season three of The Sinner. However, it surges back in season four, which takes place on the coast of Maine. Bill Pullman (who could still pull me btw šŸ˜) stars as a compassionate detective with a tragic backstory. Watch it!

I love a one of one gift, but my sweet spot is a vintage gift that is also replicable. Last year, I gave my husband a Playboy Club ashtray to keep change and keys in. The same ashtray is widely available on eBay, Poshmark etc. It appears to come in different colors but, like Chuck Klosterman, I am partial to orange. It’s fun, flirty, and unique enough.
