What feels like writing but isn't?

Our latest Dirt Prompt.

The latest Dirt prompt comes from contributor Kara Rota, who recently made a list of “things that aren’t writing but feel like writing” in her newsletter. We thought this was a very Dirt-y question and couldn’t resist spamming our friends and collaborators with it!

Detangling my hair in the shower and sticking the loose strands onto the wall, then scooping them up after and throwing the clump away.

Opening a lobster

Public speaking. I always start sentences without knowing where they'll end up, exactly like I do when I'm writing.

Lying in the grass face up to the sun

Sculpture. Like the piece is already in the clay and it's your job as a writer to find it and free it.

My life

The vast majority of the “writing” I have done in my life

I feel like I am overthinking this because my first thought was “Paris.” But then I also thought that knitting feels a lot like writing in that I feel like I’m really doing something, and then when I’m done I’m like wow I’m good I have a real talent. And then after I look at it for a minute I’m like “no one has ever been worse at this than I am”

Working out. I detest every moment of the process but feel good after I’m done.

Hmmmm I posed this to a group I was with tonight and I think the truest response I got was “therapy.” Sometimes?
